About Jim Cole
Fine Art Photography - Jim bought his first Nikon 35mm camera in 1975 while a graduate student in Marine Biology at the University of Texas. The combination of learning to see the world through a lens, his studies of the ocean environment and the wonderful Texas coast landscape ignited his fascination with nature’s incredible diversity and beauty. He shot seriously for a few years until 1981 when life’s other challenges let his passion for photography slip to a low priority. It wasn’t until 1999 when Jim and his wife Leslie decided to leave their jobs in Chicago, buy a camper, and travel the Western U.S., that Jim’s passion rekindled. It was during the following year spent in Alaska that he decided to try and make a living from his photography. Moving to Arizona in 2000 solidified Jim’s love for the landscape and in late 2001 he established Wild Horizons Photography (now Jim Cole Photography) for stock photography and fine art sales. In early 2005, he became a full-time photographer. Jim relocated to the Seattle area in 2008.
Jim specializes in color landscape and nature photography. He was born in Massachusetts, raised in Texas, and has lived in Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Alaska, Arizona and Colombia, South America.
His award winning photographs have appeared in magazines, calendars, books and other publications both nationally and internationally. Jim's images hang in private and corporate collections around the world.
Artist’s Statement:
I am drawn to dynamic landscapes, bold colors and unusual patterns in nature. I also attempt to photograph birds and other wildlife in ways that make a statement about their natural place on our planet. My hope is to build awareness and an appreciation of nature in people who view my images.
Each image captures a unique moment in time, never to be repeated in exactly the same way. While most of my photographs are the result of a pre-visualized idea mixed with extreme amounts of patience, others are nothing more than gratuitous luck. In all cases capturing that decisive moment involved an understanding of the technical aspects of photography, an awareness of my surroundings, knowledge of my subject and of course, being in the right place at the right time. I hope you enjoy a look at our natural world as I have captured it on film.
Favorite Inspiring Quote:
“We abuse the land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect.”
